Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven’s broiler.
  2. Flatten the meatballs to form round patties that match the size of the buns. You will need to use 1½ meatballs for an appropriately sized burger patty. If you are using sausages, remove the casing and shape each sausage into a burger patty.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat and cook the patties thoroughly, about 4-5 minutes per side.
  4. Place the patties on a baking sheet lined with foil. Top each patty with about 2 tbsp of pizza sauce, ½ tbsp of grated Parmesan, and a slice of provolone or mozzarella.
  5. Broil in the oven, watching carefully, until the cheese has melted and is golden brown. Remove from the oven.
  6. Cut each bun in half horizontally and place them cut side up on a baking sheet lined with foil. Brush the buns with the melted garlic butter and place under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes, until just golden.
  7. To assemble, place a patty on a bottom bun. Top with some of the sliced tomatoes and season with salt and black pepper to taste. Add the lettuce leaves and close the burger with the top of the bun. Serve immediately.
